Getting your background check shouldn't feel like a math test. At Notary Solutions LLC, we believe in total transparency. You’ve got enough on your plate, whether you’re starting a new job, applying for a license, or volunteering.
You need to know exactly what you’re paying for. No surprises. No hidden "convenience" charges at the door.
Here is the quick, no-nonsense breakdown of how Live Scan fees work in California.
The Three-Part Fee Structure
When you walk into a Live Scan appointment (or when we come to you!), your total price is usually made up of three separate parts:
- The Rolling Fee (Our service fee)
- The DOJ Fee (California Department of Justice)
- The FBI Fee (Federal Bureau of Investigation)
Think of it like a pizza delivery. The Rolling Fee is the delivery charge and the service. The DOJ and FBI fees are the ingredients the government requires to finish the job.

1. The Rolling Fee: What You Pay Us
The Rolling Fee is what the Live Scan provider charges to actually "roll" your prints. This covers our specialized equipment, the certified technician’s time, the software used to transmit your data, and our overhead.
At Notary Solutions LLC, we keep our rolling fees competitive and straightforward.
- Standard Rolling Fee: This is the base cost for us to capture your digital prints.
- Mobile Service: Since we specialize in mobile notary and fingerprinting services, there may be a travel fee depending on your location in Riverside or San Bernardino County.
We make it easy for you. Instead of fighting traffic and sitting in a dusty office, we bring the tech to your living room or office.

2. The DOJ Fee: The State’s Cut
The California Department of Justice (DOJ) charges a fee to process your criminal background check against state records.
- Standard DOJ Fee: Usually $32.
- Variations: Depending on the "ORI code" (the code on your form), this fee can sometimes be lower or even waived for certain volunteers.
We don't keep a penny of this. We collect it from you and send it directly to the State of California.
3. The FBI Fee: The Federal Level
Not every background check requires an FBI check, but most do, especially if you’re working with children, the elderly, or in the medical field.
- Standard FBI Fee: Usually $17.
- Requirement: Your Request for Live Scan Service form will tell us if this is required. If the "FBI" box is checked or required by your agency, we have to collect this.
Again, this is a pass-through fee. It goes straight to the Feds to check their national database.

Why Do Prices Vary? It’s All in the ORI Code
Have you ever wondered why your friend paid $50 and you’re being quoted $75? It’s not because the provider is playing favorites.
It all comes down to the ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) code on your paperwork. This code tells our computer system exactly which databases to check and who is responsible for the bill.
- Agency Billing: Some employers have a "Billing Number." If your form has a 6-digit billing number, you might only have to pay our Rolling Fee. The government will bill your employer for the DOJ and FBI portions.
- Specific Licenses: Different licenses (like a CCW permit or a nursing license) have different state-mandated processing costs.
Before you head to your appointment, check your form. If you aren't sure what you'll owe, feel free to contact us and read off that ORI code. We can give you a breakdown in seconds.

How to Prepare (And Save Money)
The fastest way to lose money on a Live Scan is to arrive unprepared. If your prints are rejected because of a typo or the wrong form, you might have to pay the rolling fee again for a re-do.
Follow these 3 steps for a perfect appointment:
- Bring the Right Form: You must have the "Request for Live Scan Service" form provided by your employer or licensing agency. We cannot provide this for you, as it contains your unique agency codes.
- Valid ID is Mandatory: We need a current, government-issued photo ID. A California Driver’s License, Passport, or Military ID works best.
- Check for Smudges: If you have very dry hands or work with your hands a lot, use a little water-based moisturizer the day before (but not right before the appointment!). Clear prints mean a faster process. For more on this, check out our guide on why professional fingerprinting is essential.
